Unit 1 · Lesson 5
Distributive Property (cont)
Lesson Summary
For the expression 4(2x + 5) - 9, first distribute the 4 to both terms inside the parentheses:
4 × 2x = 8x
4 × 5 = 20
This gives you 8x + 20 - 9
Then combine the constants: 20 - 9 = 11
The simplified expression is 8x + 11
For the expression 15 - 3(4x - 2), distribute the -3 to both terms inside the parentheses. Note that you're distributing a negative number:
-3 × 4x = -12x
-3 × -2 = 6 (negative times negative is positive)
This gives you 15 - 12x + 6
Then combine the constants: 15 + 6 = 21
The simplified expression is 21 - 12x (or -12x + 21)
